Student Tips for Writing a Cover Letter/Resume

July 18, 2019 by Dan

Whether you’re a high school student or a college student, if you’re new to creating professional resumes and cover letters, simply continue reading to discover a variety of handy tips which will help you craft a memorable resume and an attention-grabbing cover letter.

Student tips on how to write a student CV and resume:

  • If you don’t have any prior work experience, include any clubs that you are associated with

As a student looking to land a job, it may feel as if you need to have a job history in order to be offered one of your first jobs. However, if you don’t have any prior work experience, it’s a smart idea to mention any clubs which you are associated with.

As an example, if you’re an editor of your high school or college’s student newspaper, make sure to mention your role and the skills which you’ve picked up being a student editor in your resume.

Other examples of clubs that may impress potential recruiters include sports teams, bands and drama teams. As if you have a history of being committed to a team, it shows potential recruiters that you can be a committed, hard-working member of a team.

  • Make sure to mention any volunteering experiences

It’s also well worth mentioning any experiences which you may have as a volunteer. Even if the experiences were a compulsory part of your high school’s curriculum. As by showing recruiters that you’ve volunteered for worthy causes, you’re showing recruiters that you have a great work ethic and are likely to be trustworthy and reliable. All traits which recruiters are actively looking for in potential new employees.

  • Provide 1-2 references

As recruiters for the jobs which you apply for will likely have numerous resumes to read through, they will only have time to contact 1-2 of your references. If for any reason a recruiter requires a third reference, they’ll be able to contact you directly for a third reference. In many cases, you may be given a job, without any of your referees being called, especially if you’re applying for an entry-level position.

  • Don’t send the same cover letter to multiple companies

While the purpose of a resume is to showcase your skills and experience, the purpose of a cover letter is to show a business why you’re interested in working their for company and fulfilling their advertised position. If a recruiter believes that you’ve made no effort to tailor your cover letter to suit their business and they read cover letters from other individuals which are more personalized, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll be asked to attend an interview for your desired job. If you’re looking for ideas you can find Creative CV Designs online.

  • Make sure that every word in your resume adds value

Ideally, your resume should be short, to the point and concise. So it’s well worth reading over your resume once it’s completed in order to see if there are words or sentences which you can delete from your resume.

Hopefully, you now feel better equipped in order to apply for job positions in your chosen industry as a student.
